Hands holding a cutout of a dove symbolizing peace

Finding rest in a restless world

By Robert Prater on November 13, 2025

In our Sunday morning Bible class on October 26, we studied Hebrews 4—a passage that speaks about something everyone of us needs, especially as the year winds down: rest. Not the kind that comes from a nap or a vacation, but the type of peace that only God provides through faith in Christ.

The Hebrew writer was addressing Christians who were growing weary. Because of hardship and discouragement, they were tempted to drift back to what felt familiar and safe. He reminded them that Jesus is greater—greater than Moses, greater than the old covenant, greater than any comfort we might try to run back to. The promise still stands for God’s people today:

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.” — Hebrews 4:9

When hearts grow weary

Just like Israel of old, we can miss that rest when we stop trusting God. The Israelites were saved out of Egypt but never entered the Promised Land because of unbelief. Their hearts “melted” with fear after hearing the spies’ report. They saw the giants and forgot God’s promises.

The same thing can happen to us when discouragement, sin, or loss begins to harden our hearts. That’s why the Hebrew writer urges,

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” — Hebrews 4:7

Notice that word—today. Not tomorrow. Not “when life slows down.” Today. Faithfulness is a daily decision.

The Living Word that heals

God gives us His Word to help us with that.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God cuts deep—not to harm us, but to heal us. It’s like the work of a good doctor who must look beneath the surface to bring true healing. God’s Word reveals where our hearts have grown cold, points us back toward His mercy, and strengthens our faith when we feel weak.

How we enter God’s rest

So how do we enter God’s rest today?

  • Stay in His Word. Let Scripture speak into your daily life.
  • Pray honestly. Bring your struggles, doubts, and gratitude before Him.
  • Keep close to your church family. Encouragement from fellow believers helps us persevere.
  • Trust God’s promises now. Today is the day to believe again.

The Israelites were on the edge of the Promised Land, but turned back. Let’s not do the same. The promise still stands. Through Christ, we can find peace today and look forward to eternal rest with Him.

An invitation to rest

If your soul feels weary, remember: God hasn’t given up on you. He invites you to enter His rest—right now.

We’d love for you to join us this Sunday for Bible class and worship at Mannford Church of Christ, either in-person or online.

Come as you are. There is rest, and there is room, in Jesus.
