Prioritizing your child’s spiritual health this school year
By Robert Prater on August 28, 2025
Back-to-school season is upon us once again. Stores are bustling with parents searching for school supplies, new clothes, and lunchboxes. Our calendars quickly fill up with meetings, sports practices, and after-school activities. Amid all this planning and preparation, it’s easy to overlook one essential truth:
Your child’s most precious commodity isn’t their backpack, tablet, or education—it’s their soul.
Why the soul matters most
We often invest deeply in our kids’ academic and physical well-being, ensuring they have everything they need to succeed. But Jesus gently reminds us that nothing is more valuable than the soul. In Matthew 16:26, He says, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
Our children’s spiritual health is not an add-on or afterthought; it’s the very center of who they are and who they will become. Caring for their soul means nurturing the part of them that connects with God, develops character, and shapes their hearts.
Making spiritual care practical in a busy school year
In a season where schedules overflow, prioritizing intentional spiritual care can feel challenging. Here are some practical, achievable ways to keep your child’s spiritual growth front-and-center during this school year:
Prioritize regular conversations about faith
Use everyday moments—like dinner, car rides, or bedtime—to talk openly about God, feelings, challenges, and triumphs. Ask questions that prompt deeper thinking, such as, “Where did you see God today?” or “What was the best or hardest part of your day?”
Encourage connection with a faith community
Regular church attendance provides a stable environment that nurtures spiritual growth. Weekly Bible classes and worship services at Mannford Church of Christ reinforce biblical teaching, provide positive role models, and offer opportunities for friendships built around shared faith.
Model authentic faith at home
Children learn more from what they see than from what they’re told. Demonstrate genuine faith through your actions—show grace under pressure, seek forgiveness openly, pray regularly, and make scripture a part of your daily routine. Your example teaches more powerfully than any formal lesson.
Practical soul care in daily routines
Consider minor adjustments in your family’s daily routines to care for your child’s spiritual well-being intentionally:
- Morning blessings: Take 30 seconds each morning to speak words of encouragement and blessing over your child, reminding them they’re loved by you and God.
- Backpack prayers: Each evening, as you prepare their backpack or lunch, pray quietly for your child’s teachers, friendships, safety, and spiritual growth.
- Gratitude journals: Encourage older children or teens to spend just five minutes writing down things they’re thankful for daily. This practice cultivates gratitude, reduces anxiety, and directs their hearts to God’s provision.
