Recharging
By Robert Prater on March 13, 2025
Charging is important. With the rise of smartphones and handheld technology, we are always looking for places to charge batteries. As the energy contained in the battery is transferred to the light, heat, and sound emitted by whatever is being powered, less energy is stored in the battery.
Drained batteries and drained lives
Depending on what the battery is powering and being used for, it uses energy quickly. Have you ever noticed how running certain apps on your phone drains the battery faster than others? Maybe you’ve noticed something like this with yourself, too. The obvious comparison is sleep.
Resting all night gives you energy; the next day, your mind and body are ready to take on whatever life throws at you. Rest and recharging yourself are just as important as charging your phone. And not just physically, sometimes you need a mental break as well. Have you ever been doing work at school, and it feels like you just can’t do it anymore? That’s because your brain is telling you it is trying to compute too much.
Jesus took time to recharge
Believe it or not, Jesus often took time for Himself to recharge. One example is in Matthew 14 after Jesus feeds the 5,000. After this remarkable event, the next big story is Jesus walking on water. When reading this chapter, what often gets glossed over is why Jesus wasn’t with the disciples. Verse 23 explains, “After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone…”
After being surrounded by people and teaching them, Jesus saw that it was important to take care of Himself so that He could continue to do His best work. Jesus took time to rest and pray and recharge Himself.
Spiritual recharging for Christians
In the busy seasons of life, we often forget to recharge. As Christians, we should be diligent to recharge our spiritual batteries. When recharged, we are renewed and ready for the day spiritually. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what the will of God is, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom.12:2). A transformed, recharged, and renewed mind is what we receive when we seek God’s counsel and wisdom through His Word and prayer.
This spiritual recharging should take place regularly if not daily. Yet, let’s also not forget that our times to worship together as Christians have the power to recharge our run-down spiritual batteries. Today, we need what the Psalmist understood when he sought spiritual revival. “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand.” (Psalm 95:6-7). I know I need the strength that comes from worship.
